A funny thing happened in Alaska. A moose lost its antlers! Someone got it on video.

Moose are very big animals. They are the biggest kind of deer. Male moose can be taller than people. They can be as heavy as a car!

Male moose have big antlers on their heads. Antlers are like big bones growing out of their heads. These antlers are very heavy. They can weigh as much as a big dog!

Every year, male moose lose their antlers. This is normal. It often happens after fall. In the video, we see the moose shake its head. Both antlers fall off at once! This is very rare to see.

Why do moose have antlers? Antlers make male moose look strong. They use antlers to fight other male moose. Female moose like males with big antlers.

Moose start growing new antlers right away. The new antlers grow very fast. When antlers are growing, they have soft skin on them. This skin is called velvet. It helps the antlers grow. Later, the velvet falls off. Then the antlers get hard.

People in Alaska see moose a lot. Moose like to eat plants from water. They can even go under water to eat! In winter, moose eat bark from trees. Their big antlers help them reach high branches.
